Shirley Givens was a pupil of Ivan Galamian at the
Juilliard School. When she realized there was a lack of systematic material
suitable for teaching very young children, she wrote her own! Thus was born
Adventures in Violinland. She became well-known for her ability to teach
children, and taught the children of such reputable musicians as Itzhak
Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman, Robert Mann, Claude Frank, Phyllis Curtin,
Herbert Blomsted, and many others. The international artist, Pamela Frank
(now teaching at the Curtis Institute of Music), also began her studies with
Givens using the Adventures in Violinland books. Shirley Givens currently
teaches at the Peabody Conservatory, the Juilliard School, and Mannes
College of Music.
Teacher comment: "This has to
be favourite method book of all time for the younger beginner! Although it
is written from a child’s point of view with very humorous text and cute
illustrations which kids love to colour in, it is highly systematic in its
approach and incorporates the most rigorous standards of modern violin
technique. The books are also wonderfully self-contained with many useful
hints for parents and teachers along the way. An absolute winner!"
